YouTube is a site I have come to like so much not just because of the endless entertainment I get from watching people make idiots of themselves, but also because I can basically learn anything I wan to, any time of the day for any amount of repeats. There are singing lessons, Karate instructions, ways to improve my pool game – You name it.
But accessing this site was cut off when I went to China for my studies last year. I did not know that YouTube in China needed a proxy. YouTube is one of the restricted social sites in China, so many YouTube and Facebook fans are out of luck – unless you get a proxy – so there is always a way out.
I had heard of proxies from a friend of mine , but never really knew what they were. To this day, I don't know what he used them for, because he wasn't in China. However, when I got to China, I found out that a lot of students also studying in China use proxies to bypass internet restrictions on campus and in China. Everyone had their own favorite proxy at that time, but since then, many have closed up shop of have been blocked in China. One that is not blocked is called SecuriTales, and it's the one that I currently use.
It was not hard to break the firewall of China to access my favorite sites – not just YouTube. Did you know that Flikr is blocked now too? And even some of my friends blogs from back home – just because of their association with Google.
It is important for you to get one of these proxies if you will be going to China. Even being h ere for so little time, I've noticed that more and more sites are getting blocked, and options for breaking The GFW are getting fewer all the time.
To access YouTube in China with the proxy service SecuriTales, you don't have to install anything. That means you can use one license for you phone and computer, and even at school. It doesn't matter where you are, as long as you can open your email or access their main or secondary domains (ONE will definitely be available. While you're connected to the proxy server through their secure browser, you'll be able to surf all sites blocked by The GFW.
Here's the link for SecuriTales. There's a free trial, so it's worth trying anyway. Oh yes, it works for Vimeo too!
